EUROPEAN VETERAN FENCING TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS
21 - 24 MAY 2020 - BRUXELLES
Dear all, welcome !
All Belgian fencing associations join forces to organize the upcoming European Veteran Team Championships, from May 21st till May 24th 2020; which will take place in the ADEPS sports center of the Forêt de Sougnes in Brussels. We expect around 130 teams or more or less 700 participants, to whom we must add all the supporters, coaches, family members, fans etc.
Belgium is one of the founding members of the EVF in 1991, at the conference of Loughborough, and we already had the pleasure to organize the 1993 individual championships in Liège, and the 2002 team championships in Antwerp. Now we’re proud to have the opportunity to organize once again this event, that grew in size and importance, and we are very happy to receive a strong support from the public authorities and an increased participation of the fencers, reflecting the growing importance of veteran sports in general, and veteran fencing in particular.
This organization is for us an opportunity to reinforce and promote veteran fencing. It is common knowledge that veterans are more and more involved in sports activities, in conjunction with the increase of life expectancy. Sports and physical activities contribute significantly to secure an improved health condition and must be promoted at all ages. Not forgetting that for us fencing is more than just a sport, it a passion, I would even say a virus!
Last but not least we are happy for the strong support we are receiving from the public authorities : ADEPS, Sport Vlaanderen and Visit Brussels. This organization would probably not have been possible without this support, that is why we thank them warmly.

We are looking forward to welcoming over 120 teams from 26 countries which represents the largest annual gathering of Veteran Fencers in Europe. Fencing veterans play an important role in the development of our sport. Lifelong and newly developed rivalries played out in an atmosphere which demonstrates that fencing is a sport that can be enjoyed by everyone of all ages and locations. The European Team Championships provide a great opportunity for veteran fencers at all levels to discover the warmth and friendship within a highly competitive atmosphere that explains the continuing growth of Veterans Fencing throughout Europe and the rest of the World.
This year we will all be enjoying Belgian hospitality in Brussels. I congratulate Paul Van Agtmael and the Brussels 2020 Organising Committee on the enormous work they have accomplished in staging these Championships at short notice and look forward to celebrating the next group of European Veteran Team Fencing Champions. I also look forward to introducing our inaugural ‘EVF Fencers of the Year’ during the course of this event.
